The Sleeping Beauty Week 4 Extra credit

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping beauty was first being made into cartoon at the year of 1959, it was directed by Clyde Geronimi and wrote by Charles Perrault, the film was an animation of the story Sleeping beauty, there was no real actress, perhaps we all knew the story since we were little no matter where we grow up, the beautiful princess was cursed and only able to be broken with the kiss of a chosen prince. The rollout when it was first released in 1959 was about $36,479,805, I think it was considered good at the time. One of the comment I read on Metacritic by Steve Daryl is that he wrote “Okay, so the star lovebirds in Disney’s filigreed, hand-drawn fairy tale — Barbie-doll-slim Princess Aurora, cursed to enter suspended animation at 16, and her Abercrombie & Fitch-worthy savior Prince Phillip, who literally rides a white horse” this showed his despise of the story, the adjective he uses on describing the character showed a lot of his thought toward the setting of the plot, the princess was worthless, and the male prince is the true hero.

The film portraited gender as the standard view of gender being taught, the prince was described as brave and powerful in the movie 01:10:17 he was fighting the dragon by himself and the fairy with him only helped a lot, and the prince described masculinity, also a lot of good traits that symbolize the elite of the male gender but in the other hand the princess, who were just made to be pretty, slept almost the entire story without any catalogue, was saved by the prince at the end, which showed that female are supposed to be weak and captured, and only strong and chosen male could save them. I watched another film The Force Awaken this week, I think the gender has changed a lot, in the force awaken, Rey as the main character was a strong independent female, that does not need help from anyone, and she is tough mentally and also being able to save her teammate, these are the idea we should all learn, it is important to have a wider view on gender, anyone can do anything, do not discriminate because of gender or race or anything, we need to have an open mind.
